Farm Hacks: Quick Tying a Hay Bale

Nothing makes more of a mess than moving around an open bale of hay. It leaves a trail everywhere… and if you’ve ever dealt with trying to neatly open and divide a hay bale, you should know exactly what I mean.

Here at the farm I feed about two and a half 2-string square bales of hay per day. Most of the time, I also end up with half a bale left in my feed cart. So to cut down on the mess and wasted hay, it’s always best to retie an open bale if you plan on moving it. I’ve experimented with numerous different tying strategies and this is my favorite.

Before we get started, let’s set ourselves up for success! When you open a bale, stand it up on end and cut the strings near the top.

DON’T take the strings off! Get them out of your way but leave them in place as much as you can.  Take as much hay as you need leaving the strings in place.

Now you are ready to retie!! Helpful hint: this technique works best when you have removed at least 2-4 flakes depending on how tightly the hay is baled, just so you have enough string to tie everything together,

First grab the two strings together on the side furthest from you and tie them in a knot so that they remain next to each other, as shown in the gallery above. Then grab the two strings from the other side. Next slip the in tied strings underneath the knot you tied on the other side. Pull them back towards you as tight as you can…

Then tie a knot around the second set of strings and voila! The knots will hold so you can lift the bale!
